Department of UG Physical Education is established during the academic year 2017-18. The department comprises of 3 staff and 89 students. The vision of the department is “ to enrich the students with the basics of physical education”. Physical Education aims at building up students with physical and mental and courage.
The course content includes areas such as Biomechanics, Exercise Physiology, Sports Psychology, Sports Journalism, Sports Nutrition and Physiotherapy. The strength of the department is reflected through the achievements of the students, Five students Represented for Tamil Nadu team in the game of Handball. Students were encouraged to get a job in various defence areas. Two students were selected through government placement in Indian Army and Indian Navy.
The classroom teaching and the outdoor practicals were made lively through discussions, teacher-student interaction, ICT based teaching, Group discussions, practicals and peer teaching. The department takes special care in mentoring and counselling measures taken for advanced learners and remedial teaching for slow learners to achieve their goals. Parents were informed about the student’s progression through parents meeting, valid feedbacks were obtained to improve the facilities and develop student abilities.
The Department of Postgraduate Social Work is established in the year 2013 with a vision of crafting professional social workers who are dedicated to the service of their fellow human beings and achieve excellence in their walks of life’s through which the mission of Nanjil Catholic College of Arts and Science, Kaliyakkavilai, become more visibly accomplished. Social work Department has expanded its horizons of training by starting with Pre-Doctoral Course in the year 2017 and Doctoral programme in the year 2018 with respectively.
The goal of the social work programme is to educate students in advanced social work practice and leadership roles. The department has adopted villages continuously in collaboration with NGO’s and industries for community development. The department focuses on strengthening social work research and community extension work. It is started with an initial strength of two faculty members, two guest faculty members and 8 students. The Masters of Social Work course is a program of two years of full-time university-level study. It aims to prepare students for effective professional practice as social workers in the social and community services sector. The department of social work focuses on two specializations namely Human Resource Management and Medical and Psychiatry.
The department of social work has always tried to enhance the zeal of competence among the faculty by encouraging them to undergo training, workshops and publish research work at national and international level. Besides it has incorporated innovative teaching and learning practices (Pedagogic) along with improving the didactic classroom teaching, in the form of supplementary field visits, guest lectures, conclaves, summit, seminars, workshop and symposium, whereby stalwarts in social science and field practitioners have been invited to interact. At present Department has four full-time faculty members and one guest lecturer out of which one faculty member has approved as a Research Guide by MSU for social work discipline.
Now student’s strength is 29 in I MSW, 20 in II MSW, 6 in M.phil and 8 in PhD. The Department has produced four gold medals out of the five batches in the university examinations. Department has plans to start a certificate course in Counseling and Career Guidance in the near future.
Social Work practicum prepares students for professional Social Work practice in various settings such as Communities, Hospitals, Clinics, Counseling centres, Non-Government Organisations, industries and the Government departments concerned with welfare and development (social welfare, rural development, urban development, women and child development and local self-governance). It prepares students to work in individuals, groups and communities by performing roles of counselors, facilitators and activists. It also seeks to equip them with knowledge and experience to undertake advocacy and networking to promote change in social policy. The Personnel Management and Industrial Relations program with its basic grounding in social work aims at preparing candidates to perform the human relations functions within the corporate and civil society organisations with a more humane face.
